Nukuoro
Sculptures from Micronesia
Nukuoro Atoll is a ring of tiny islands with a total area of 1.7 square kilometres encircling a lagoon 6 kilometres in diameter. Nukuoro has a dwindling population of 300 inhabitants. The fame and almost legendary popularity of the tinu aitu sculptures from this atoll in Micronesia is built on their exceptional rarity and unusual forms.
description
The tino aitu figures purchased by Johann Stanislaus Kubary on Nukuoro Atoll from 1873 onwards have been brought together by the Fondation Beyeler in Basle. This publication features almost half of the known sculptures in existence. They are compared here in their original form for the first time, providing a unique opportunity for a reassessment. These rare pieces, which are normally distributed across museums and private collections around the world, have been photographed in great detail, enabling a fresh perspective on a unique artistic tradition. The book concludes with a catalogue raisonné.
press commentaries
This beautifully illustrated and written book is the most comprehensive survey of the iconic tino aitu Nukuoro figures yet produced; it is unlikely to be surpassed. - Dieses wundervoll illustrierte und geschriebene Buch ist die bisher umfassenste Aufnahme der ikonischen tino aitu Nukuoro Skulpturen; dass es übetroffen wird, ist sehr unwahrscheinlich.
