Georg Forster
From the South Seas to Wörlitz
At the age of seventeen, Georg Forster embarked on a voyage around the world with the famous James Cook. In 1775, shortly after his return, the explorer met the liberal-minded Prince Franz from Dessau and his wife Louise in London, and they returned home laden with gifts. To this day the unique South Seas collection in Wörlitz bears witness to the encounter.
description
Whilst Captain Cook strode off to measure the world, Georg Forster, as scientific assistant of his father and scientific artist on board explored recently-discovered coasts and islands including New Zealand and New Caledonia, Tahiti and Tonga. Three years later he spent two weeks in Wörlitz, where he reported on his voyage in the light of the Enlightenment. This volume, densely packed with plates, historic paintings and drawings and lively quotations by Forster and his contemporaries revives the world of Polynesia with objects from the South Seas like the grass skirt of a Tahitian dancer, two maces from Tonga and an axe of jade-green nephrite from New Zealand.
