Mapping Worlds
"Mapping Worlds" presents a selection of works on paper produced by Shuvinai Ashoona over the past two decades. Though many of her early drawings depict daily life in Kinngait (formerly Cape Dorset), Nunavut, continuing an artistic tradition begun by the artist’s grandmother Pitseolak Ashoona (1908–1983) and first cousin Annie Pootoogook (1969 – 2016), Shuvinai Ashoona is best known for developing a personal iconography with imagery ranging from closely observed naturalistic scenes of her Arctic home to monstrous and fantastical visions.

Mapping Worlds
This exhibition brings together a selection of drawings created by the Inuk artist Shuvinai Ashoona over the past two decades. In many of her drawings, Ashoona references traditional Inuit imagery—from quotidian life to the mythic—and she is celebrated for the imaginative way she combines these and other cultural references to develop a sophisticated and highly personal iconography. Derived equally from her environment and her imagination, Ashoona’s work is fed by her fascination with horror films, comic books and television. In this exhibition, visitors will encounter Ashoona’s wide-reaching interests that blur boundaries between the worlds of reality and fantasy, past and future. Organized and circulated by the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Toronto and curated by Nancy Campbell

When I Draw
The Perimeter is proud to announce a solo exhibition of Shuvinai Ashoona. Shuvinai Ashoona makes drawings which engage with the complexities of life, land and community in the Canadian Arctic, through fantastical motifs and modes of storytelling. The work interweaves scenes from everyday Arctic life with imagery associated with Inuit animism and shamanism. This is the first time Ashoona’s works will be shown in Europe since receiving a Special Mention by the awards jury at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022, for her installation of six drawings in The Milk of Dreams.
