Bobur Ismoilov - Apostrophe
The work of the Uzbek artist Bobur Ismoilov (b. 1973, Tashkent) portrays a theatrical world: at times showing costumed individuals, at other times scenes filled with all kinds of figures telling stories that are fairytale-like, mysterious, and surreal. With contributions from both Western and Uzbek perspectives, this volume presents the multifaceted work of the award-winning artist.
description
“My invented characters, like their worlds, are decorations of my illusions”. Ismoilov’s paintings make use of traditional Eastern – more precisely Central Asian – images and motifs from his homeland, but without ignoring questions and themes of the present. Where do we come from? Who are we? Where are we going? These fundamental questions of human existence are continually revisited in Ismoilov’s works, which are often painted in warm earth tones. Uniquely appealing in the artist’s approach is his engagement with the depicted protagonists, even as he remains determined never to reveal their mystery.
