People of Color

Radically expanding our understanding of Senga Nengudi’s art, this book publishes never-before-seen drawings, prints, photographs, performance scores, and poetry, spaninng five decades of her practice.  

Piles of Inspiration Everywhere explores the physical space where renowned artist Barkley Hendricks worked and lived. A collaboration between photographer David Katzenstein and Susan Hendricks, this book invites readers into the space Barkley and Susan shared for 35 years, offering readers a bold, detailed study of the artist’s life.  

This lavishly illustrated volume approaches the vast continent of Africa from a variety of viewpoints; beyond prejudice and stereotypes, via cultural history and contemporary art: by means of permanent changes of perspective and a diversity of artistic voices. The history of humankind meets the colonial past and the omnipresence of aspects of Africa in many regions of the world.

"Xican-a.o.x. Body" centres the political and creative resistance of Xicanx artists from 1968 to the present. The publication presents new histories of Xicanx art, illustrating how artists foreground the Brown body to explore, expand, and complicate conceptions linked to Chicanx, Latinx and Xicanx experiences.

"Heroes: Principles of African Greatness" is a multilayered project that relays the stories of the key heroic principles and people in Africa’s arts and history, and considers the core values of leadership – justice, integrity, generosity and empathy. Each artwork in Heroes is paired with a historic African person, a “hero in history,” who embodies the thematic value featured in the selected work.

This is the first publication to document and contextualise Clark’s large-scale, collaborative art works. These projects demonstrate Clark’s career-long commitment to addressing the urgent issue of racial inequality in U.S. society and her philosophy of creatively engaging the viewer in reflection on the nation’s history of slavery and our roles in dismantling systemic racism today.

"Chakaia Booker: The Observance" is the first comprehensive monograph on this important yet understudied American artist. Illuminating more than three decades of Booker’s practice, the publication explores her signature form – monumental works made of rubber – while showcasing her innovations across mediums including photography, painting, and prints.

This book spotlights a complex art collection established at the intersection of modern art and social justice. In 1963, as civil rights protests swirled across the fiercely segregated state, this liberal arts college became an unlikely hub in Mississippi envisioned as “an interracial oasis in which the fine arts are the focus and magnet.”

Harlem’s 125th Street is a marker of 20th-century urban experience that encapsulates powerful stories of business and consumption, real estate and gentrification, glamourand entertainment, and political uprising. The book explores works and themes from a large roster of photographers and performance artists who have engaged with the Berenice Abbott, Khalik Allah, constant mutation of this street life.

"The GOAT" is the first monograph of Afro-Cuban artist Tomás Esson. It features paintings created over a span of thirty-five years and showcases a distinct style that overflows with energy, biting humour and suggestive narratives that often involve highly sexualized, monstrous creatures alongside the heroes of the Cuban Revolution.
