A Model Workshop
Margaret Lowengrund and the Contemporaries
"A Model Workshop" is the first exhibition to cover the understudied impact of Margaret Lowengrund and the vibrant New York print workshop/gallery she founded, The Contemporaries. Lowengrund (1902–57) was a visionary leader, organizer, and critic within the mid-twentieth century printmaking community; an artist-printmaker herself; and, in opening The Contemporaries, the first woman to launch her own printmaking workshop in the US. The exhibition explores Lowengrund’s own artistic work; maps the far-reaching networks of artists who moved through The Contemporaries in the 1950s; and explores the workshop’s legacy as the long-running Pratt Graphic Art Center (PGAC) following its 1957 merger with the Pratt Institute. Addressing themes such as feminisms, labor, international exchange, and collecting the “modern” print, A Model Workshop recovers Lowengrund as a key linchpin in the field of mid-century printmaking with far-reaching influence on postwar artistic production.
