Ayeye! Ruth Baumgarte at Iwalewahaus
Ruth Baumgarte in the Iwalewahaus
The new, richly illustrated book revolves around Ruth Baumgarte's conception of humanity – from her early works of the Second World War to the vividly colored African compositions of her later years. In her oeuvre, experiences of the 20th century coalesce into a visual reflection on both threat and renewal, as well as humanity's responsibility towards nature and society.
description
Over four decades, Baumgarte (1923–2013) developed a distinctive visual language out of existential urgency, culminating in her Africa cycle. More than forty journeys took her to Africa, where, with a keen eye for people and situations, she grappled with postcolonial realities, social inequalities, and cultural identity. In dialogue with contemporary African artists, this volume explores biographical aspects, humanity, and a global perspective.
