Elfie Semotan Collector's Edition
Marina Abramovic, 2003
Many of Elfie Semotan’s (b.1941) photographs are famous without the public knowing who took them. Over the last 30 years, she has produced a kaleidoscope of very different portraits from her encounters with other artists, and this new book is an opportunity to discover the most fascinating of them.
description
The 39 selected portraits include Marina Abramovic, Georg Baselitz, Vanessa Beecroft, Louise Bourgeois, Marc Brandenburg, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Richard Hamilton, Jenny Holzer, Alex Katz, Maria Lassnig, Jonathan Meese, Daniel Richter, Jason Rhoades, Dash Snow, Jeff Wall and Erwin Wurm. Elfie Semotan has lived and worked in New York since 1994. She has worked with Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer and for Vogue, Elle, Esquire, Haper’s Bazaar and Marie Claire. Initially she worked as a photo-model herself, and her own career as a photographer did not get going until the end of the 1960s. Thanks to spectacular photo sequences she produced in the world of fashion, she soon became a recognized and celebrated artist in both Europe and the USA. Her collaboration with fashion designer Helmut Lang was particularly important for her work.
Semotan’s ‘models’, who are artists, friends and significant others, occupy the terrain between role-play and exposure. Many of the personalities she sought out years ago have since become international stars. Semotan always deliberately avoids getting entrenched in an easily recognizable style. Each time, she looks for an individual approach, relying on her own mood between model and photographer.
